POST HEADQUARTERS
The post headquarters was a far cry from the kinds of headquarters inhabited by most of the generals in the field. Grant and Lee lived most of the war in tents. The commander here had a roof--and a cupola--over his head, porches for the sulty summer evenings, and a small pond surrounded by a white gravel walk.
